35 Megalopolis is a Movie Unlike Any Other

Francis Ford Coppola's Self-Financed Movie is a Beautiful Mess

It's easy to understand why so many producers turned down Megalopolis, forcing Francis Ford Coppola to finance the movie with $120 million from his own pocket. The movie is completely absurd, over-the-top, and cheesy. Most importantly, Megalopolis isn't afraid to break away from what's expected from it, delivering something brand new — for better or for worse. The main premise revolves around the dystopian city of New Rome and the artist who clashes against the mayor to pave the way for a utopian future.

Megalopolis wasn't made for any intended audience other than Coppola himself, and that's the beauty of it. The movie, different from the current wave of never-ending franchises and movies meticulously designed by studios to make money, feels unashamedly sincere. It creates a link between the audience and an influential auteur with complete freedom to say what bothers him, regardless of the embarrassing extremes Megalopolis goes to. Those who love it will probably have it in their top five of the year, but many will take it for an ego trip. For this reason, it lands at the bottom of the list.

It Subverts What Viewers Would Expect From a Prequel Movie

The prequel to A Quiet Place, A Quiet Place: Day One moves away from the Abbott family, focusing on Samira, a young terminally ill woman who witnesses the first day the extraterrestrial creatures invade the planet. Sam and Eric are on the ground, learning how to survive and helping others as they navigate the new ordinary.

The silent, pulsating fear from the previous movies is present in this one too, but it finds its footing in the sweeter moments. While the apocalypse is happening, Eric and Sam decide to recreate Sam's fondest memories of getting pizza with her father. The ending is predictably bleak, but still squeezes in a wistfully happy note in how the characters meet their maker.

30 The Book of Clarence Has Thought-Provoking Depth

A Biblical Tale with a Humorous Tone

The Book of Clarence is a comedy-drama set in 33 A.D., at the tail end of the ministry of Jesus Christ. The film follows the exploits of Clarence, a Hebrew man who struggles to survive in the increasingly dangerous province of Judea under the Roman occupation. However, through his encounters with Jesus and the Twelve Disciples, Clarence begins to learn a lesson about faith.

While The Book of Clarence didn't do much business at the box office, the film excels in its surprisingly deep exploration of faith. Bolstered by terrific performances from LaKeith Stanfield, Omar Sy, and Alfre Woodard, The Book of Clarence is an intriguing exploration into how the life of a regular person may have been affected by the ministry of Jesus. The depth and drama of this film is enough to earn it a spot on the list, but there are several others in theaters now that are even better than The Book of Clarence.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes resumes the conflict between humans and apes with the presence of Mae, an unreliable young woman who may or may not be on Noa's side. In the film, human civilization is nothing but a vague memory, which makes the worldbuilding all the more fascinating. The world of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes feels like an entirely new planet, hinting at what the franchise's 20th-century movies were aiming at. The new characters are compelling and worth caring about, indicating the potential of a powerful sequel.

Cuckoo exemplifies just how much of a rising star Tilman Singer is in the horror director landscape. Much like his directorial debut, the German supernatural horror Luz, Cuckoo is unbashfully and refreshingly bizarre. Speaking of rising stars, Hunter Schafer garnered praise from critics in her first lead film role after two impressive seasons on the hit show Euphoria.

In Cuckoo, Schafer plays Gretchen – a teenager who moves in with her father at a resort in the German Alps. Gretchen becomes suspicious of the fascination her father's boss Herr König, played brilliantly by Dan Stevens, develops for her younger half-sister Alma. This along with a series of strange occurrences leads to a spiraling mystery of a chilling plot that remains unnerving throughout. Cuckoo isn't the peak of the genre, but it proves to be a fun watch horror fans can easily enjoy.

Mean Girls is an adaptation of the hit Broadway musical of the same name, which was itself based on the classic 2004 film by Tina Fey and starring Lindsey Lohan and Rachel McAdams. Like the original film, Mean Girls follows the exploits of Cady Herron as she enrolls in a new school, only to fall victim to the tirades of the Plastics, a group of popular girls led by the vicious Regina George.

Although Mean Girls infamously sparked some unfavorable reactions from audiences who weren't expecting a musical, the film is a necessary update to one of the most classic movies of the 2000s. Tina Fey's involvement proves to be a major help to the reboot, updating the humor and events to make the new Mean Girls as good as the original. However, not everyone will enjoy the musical format, earning Mean Girls the number 25 spot.

After their plane crashes in the Andes mountains, 16 survivors are forced to brave the elements as they wait for rescue. Tragically, the survivors are forced to turn to cannibalism to sustain themselves.

The Netflix original Society of the Snow handles its subject matter as respectfully as possible, given the delicate nature of the situation, and depicts the truly horrific events with poise. Even so, audiences will certainly be horrified by the lengths these individuals were forced to go to to survive, making their story all the more tragic.

22 Self-Reliance Explores The Death Game From A New Angle

It's an Escalating Thriller with a Dynamic Cast

Self-Reliance is a Hulu original film directed by and starring New Girl's Jake Johnson. The film follows a lonely and unfulfilled man named Tommy, who is approached with a surprising offer from none other than Andy Samberg. Tommy is given the chance to win $1 million — if he can survive 24 hours being hunted down by elite assassins as part of a dark web reality show. However, Tommy discovers that the assassins won't kill him if he is in the presence of another person.

While Self-Reliance's concept isn't entirely new, borrowing from the often-adapted Most Dangerous Game storyline, the film itself manages to be a mostly entertaining jaunt. The dynamic between Johnson and co-star Anna Kendrick proves to be a highlight of Self-Reliance, even if their storyline feels somewhat out-of-place beside the film's more action-heavy aspects. Johnson shows some skill in the directing arena, leaving viewers excited to see what his next directorial project might be.

The First Omen, the sixth film of the franchise, is the first entry in the mainline series since Omen IV: The Awakening in 1991 and serves as a prequel to the Omen franchise as a whole.

In The First Omen, an American nun Margaret, played by Nell Tiger Free who is best known as the teenage Myrcella Baratheon in Game of Thrones, is sent to protest-filled Rome where she must contend with a horrid church plot to create the Antichrist. The First Omen received glowing reviews, making it easily the best-reviewed Omen film since the 1976 original.

A Spy Story Filled with Twists

Argylle is a new and exciting spy thriller from Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn. The film follows Bryce Dallas Howard's Ellie Conway, a writer known for her espionage novels starring the James Bond-esque Agent Argylle. However, when the world's intelligence agencies discover that her books have depicted real-life events before they happen, Conway is wrapped up in a spy adventure herself.

One of Argylle's most intriguing elements is its star-studded cast, which includes the ever-popular Henry Cavill, known for playing Superman in the DCEU and Geralt of Rivia in the first few seasons of Netflix's The Witcher. While the film indulges in some of Matthew Vaughn's more eccentric filmmaking techniques, there is something to be said for how Argylle overcomes the tired tropes of the spy thriller franchise. It may not win many awards, but Argylle may have reinvented its genre, and that alone is enough to land it a respectable rank.

17 Twisters Is The Sequel Movie-Goers Didn't Know They Needed

Disaster Blockbusters Are Back

Legacy sequels have been all the rage in Hollywood lately whether it is films like The First Omen, Top Gun: Maverick, or the newly released Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Hollywood is leaning into nostalgia hard lately for better and for worse. Growing up isn't easy, and Pixar's attempt to break it down and deal with it cinematically is par excellence. Inside Out 2 is unrelentingly funny, wise, brave, and emotional — something that was much required for kids growing into young adults. Even older audiences relate to the feelings captured so succinctly in Inside Out 2.
